Recent events have brought to light how crucial information truth is on social media.
In an effort to make sure “that a healthy news ecosystem and journalism can thrive”, Facebook introduced on January 11, 2017 The Facebook Journalism Project.
Fidji Simo, Director of Product explained in a detailed Newsroom post:
That’s why today we’re announcing a new program to establish stronger ties between Facebook and the news industry. We will be collaborating with news organizations to develop products, learning from journalists about ways we can be a better partner, and working with publishers and educators on how we can equip people with the knowledge they need to be informed readers in the digital age.
The Facebook Journalism Project works in three ways:
- Collaborative development with news partners of news products on Facebook.
- Training (elearning courses, upcoming certificate curriculum), tools (free access to CrowdTangle) & help with eyewitness media for journalists.
- Training (improving news literacy) & tools (hoax report and fact checking) for all users.
Why is this relevant to Social Media Managers?
Directly, it is not.
Indirectly, this is one more signal from Facebook showing the importance of publishing high-quality content of their platform.
